Abortion is necessary healthcare and any laws that restrict access or criminalize the procedure will only cause harm. In the state of Texas after the abortion ban, the maternal mortality rate went up so much that they just stopped tracking it. Abortion bans are deadly and terrible for mothers.

Imagine a patient goes to a clinic for care, and the solution offered is ending a separate developing life. To me that seems different from treating a sickness or healing a body. I get the other side calls it healthcare, but my gut says it just isn't the same thing.

Well first off, a gut feeling is far from a logical argument. As for calling medical care that that advises an abortion immoral is just bizarre. A fetus is, by definition, a parasitic entity. If it can not sustain itself on it's own at the extreme detriment of it's host, the mother's life and safety should always come first. And in case you meant a woman making a non medically advised decision to end a pregnancy, that is still a healthcare decision. No law should police what is between an individual and a medical professional. That is part of our liberties.

My opponent makes a fair point about mothers needing care, and I’m not sure how to argue with that. Still, imagine someone with a dangerous pregnancy: helping the mother and ending a separate life feel like two different things to me. My gut just says that difference matters.

I think I am actually confused on what the argument being made is. Are you saying that there is care that doesn't involve ending the pregnancy? Because if you are not a medical professional, that would seem strange. And what do you mean when you say "separate life"? Because a fetus is not really a separate life. It's a dependent life.

In a case where the treatment is ending the developing life, I struggle to see what that separation would be. Take ectopic pregnancies. It is a pregnancy that takes place in the fallopian tube (or technically anywhere outside of the uterus, but mostly in the fallopian tube). If left to develop, it has an extremely high likelihood of killing both mother and fetus. In states where abortion is criminalized, the hesitation medical professionals take out of fear of penalties as extreme as the death penalty becomes the difference between life and death.
