The other side's safety worries are real, but banning ownership is the wrong tool. A smartphone is a pocket-sized public square, and the problem isn't possession, it's unmanaged access and no coaching. Ban ownership and kids still borrow phones at school or a friend's house, just with less supervision and more secrecy. A 12-year-old with clear rules, parental controls, and honest conversation can learn judgment early. A blanket ban also punishes families who are already handling this responsibly. If the goal is protecting kids, regulate use and design, not ownership.
