Yes. Nearly everything that has that large of a grip on society is regulated in some way, shape or form, and just because its social media doesn't make it any different

Social media companies are still private choices, and treating them like water or electricity feels like a step too far. People can pick another app if they hate one. That's not like a utility at all, and I worry about the government deciding what counts as acceptable online.

I don't necessarily think that regulating social media means the government decides what is acceptable online, I think that it is closer to them preventing social media from getting monopolized by infectious agendas that could be detrimental to society, which in most cases can be seen as a net positive.

Think about MySpace and Vine, apps that faded because people moved on. You do make a fair point that big platforms have a huge reach, but treating them like utilities would just freeze them in place and hand politicians control. That worries me.

People move on from everything. In the history of time people move on from things and find new alternatives in all sectors of things, regulating it won't change that. You are interpreting the "regulation" as total governmental control, when regulation could simply be the government stepping in to prevent ideas that negatively perpetuate the human population to be censored, especially egregious ones.

You make a fair point about big platforms having huge reach. But remember the Fairness Doctrine, where government forced balance in media? It just became a weapon for whoever was in power. I still think people switching apps is the better check.
