The other side acts like it's either deep space or fixing problems here, but that's a false choice. That research leads to tech we all use, like better cameras and medical imaging, and it inspires kids to chase science. Cutting it to save a tiny slice of the budget would be incredibly short-sighted.
Deep space exploration will help humanity get more resources like water from moon or mars and with water we can create hydrogen and oxygen. We have to start somewhere because after 1 billion years earth will be unhabitable. Nasa get 0.09% of US gdp which is nothing compared to money wasted on wars.

Sure, the idea of mining asteroids or having a plan B for humanity sounds great, and I'm all for it. But shutting down deep space funding to save a small slice of the budget isn't going to fix poverty or climate change. The research gives us practical tech we use every day, and that's worth keeping.
