Is a project only as open as its least-open dependency? That standard would disqualify any open-source tool that runs on proprietary servers, hiring proprietary compilers, or interacts with a closed database. The couch analogy misreads the architecture: the proprietary model isn't part of the project, it's an external service the project talks to. The source, license, and forkability all remain intact. If we demand purity from every optional API, we don't protect open source, we just starve it of useful tools. The real threat is mandatory dependency, not interoperability. Open source can coexist with closed services without losing its soul.
