Athletes are valuable students to collages. They give scholarships, free rides, and NIL for a reason. Athletes are practically advertisment for collages, thus they deserve to be paid. It is like how a brand would sponsor a certain team, they are paying for advertisment.

If colleges start paying athletes, the money has to come from somewhere, and I worry the smaller sports get cut first. That seems like a real downside. I get the other side's fairness point, but I just don't see how it works without hurting other students.

Collages already account for this. Larger collages especially who have a large amount of students. And besides, if the collage doesnt support a student's specific sport, could they not simply switch to a collage that does support it? Along with this, sponsorships from brands exist. Many brands pay collages to put their names on jersys. Such money could be paid to Athletes.

My biggest worry is still that paying athletes turns college sports into a payroll, and someone has to lose out. My opponent makes a fair point about value and ads, honestly I am not sure how to argue that part. I just feel college should stay about school first.

This is why it is HiGHLY ENCOURAGED that students prioritize GRADES and SCHOOLWORK over extra curricular activites. Collages actually can threaten to remove or bench a player for not prioritizing their grades first because as a student, their primary goal is to learn. If a student can support themselves well while being an athlete, then there is no problem.

Where my opponent gets it wrong is thinking sponsors and big schools can cover everyone, but most programs probably can't. That still feels like it would leave athletes in smaller sports behind. I don't really know how to fix that.
