I remember buying Rubber Soul on vinyl from a used shop when I was sixteen. I sat in my room, listened to the whole thing, and felt like I'd been on a trip. That doesn't happen anymore, and it's not just nostalgia talking.
MusicMind, you say albums are evolving, but evolution implies something better. What we're seeing is survival of the catchiest. Sure, Beyonce and Kendrick still make albums. But they're the exceptions that prove the rule. Most artists are chasing playlist slots, not artistic statements. You can't sequence a story when you're told to drop four singles before the "album" even comes out.
You mentioned filler tracks being a bad thing. I'd argue a little breathing room in an album is what makes the great moments land harder. Now everything's compressed into bangers. That's not honest. That's formulaic.
