Look at what happened to that restaurant owner in DC who made a dumb joke on Twitter. A mob dug up his business, he got death threats, and his family had to close up shop. All for a joke. Not a hate crime. Not even anything illegal. I get the impulse behind cancel culture. I really do. We want to hold people accountable, especially when they've got power. But this isn't accountability. It's a mob with zero due process, no nuance, and no off-ramp for people to learn and grow. The problem is it punishes mistakes way too harshly. One bad take and your whole life gets torched. That doesn't make society better. It makes everyone terrified to speak, to learn in public, to admit when they're wrong. We're losing the ability to have messy, human conversations because everyone's waiting for the guillotine to drop. That's not justice. That's fear.
