Why throw away the actual book once it's scanned? Some people don't have devices or power, so a physical copy is all they can use. I'm not sure how to argue it better, but destroying them just feels wasteful and sad.

This would be cheaper with little to no downsides. why should libraries be forced into sacrificing money and time keeping the books in good condition when they can be digitally recreated at any time. It seems like anyone who owns items has complete autonomy over it and it would be strange to start forcing people not to destroy specific items that they own.

Isn't there something lost when a book only exists as a file? You make a fair point about cost and ownership, honestly I can't really argue with that. But still, keeping the physical copies around just feels safer to me somehow.

Yea some people cant afford cars, some people can afford lightbulbs. Should we force horse staples to remain open? Should we forced lanterns to still be sold? books are far cheaper to be taken care of and accessed digitally. Over it digitalizing books will drop the price to reach them rather than raise it. (even if high initial cost) As well as technology is the future it seems strange to think that down grading technology is better because of short term cost.

You're probably right about cost, and I don't really know how to argue with the tech stuff. But practically, if the only copy is digital, someone without power or a device just can't read it at all. That seems like a real loss, even if I can't prove it.

Backups probably do make digital copies safer, I can't really fight that. But imagine a commuter with no phone or power who just wants a book off the shelf. If it's gone, that's it. I still feel we shouldn't destroy them.

The real issue is whether a book is still accessible to everyone. You're right that libraries have computers, but that's not the same as a book on a shelf. I still feel destroying them is a mistake.
