Look at what actually happened when Greek communists held real power, even briefly. In the 1944-45 period and during the Civil War, their approach meant forced mobilization, political executions, and a brutally rigid line that treated anyone questioning the party as an enemy. The practical consequence is that ordinary people got caught between a right-wing state and a communist apparatus that wasn't building freedom for workers, it was building a new hierarchy. Even today, KKE's nostalgia for Stalinism isn't just ahistorical, it's a direct threat to the kind of pluralist left that could actually win over Greek society. I respect that the communists fought against the Nazi occupation, that's real courage. But romanticizing them ignores what they did to fellow Greeks the moment they had a chance. If you support them, you're supporting a model that has failed every time it's been tried, and I'd rather see the left actually learn from that than repeat it.

Banning a party isn't just a legal question, it's a practical one. Look what happens when you criminalize a political movement with real working-class support: you drive it underground, you radicalize its fringe, and you hand it a martyr's narrative. That doesn't make Greece safer, it makes the polarization worse. Even if we accept every grim detail about the civil war, and I don't doubt many of those things happened, the right response isn't to outlaw communists, it's to let them stand for election and lose on the merits. And look at the ethics here. If we condemn the communists for treating their opponents as enemies to be destroyed, banning them would do exactly the same thing, just in reverse. That's not justice, that's revenge. A democratic state has to be better than that. I'd rather judge them by what they do today, in the open, than repeat the very cycle of persecution they once used.
