Participating is more important than winning because when you participate, you will get many chances. Even though you lost, you still can participate just like winning. Participating makes you more confident and brave just like winning. So it's like the same thing but different type of winning.

Isn't winning kind of the whole point of playing? I get that showing up matters, but if nobody cared who wins, why keep score at all? Maybe the other side sees something I don't, but I still feel effort only means much when it's aimed at actually winning.

But just because of getting gifts, it's important. So I think that even if you don't get any prizes, it still matters.

The practical downside is that if participation counts most, people stop pushing to improve and scoreboards become decoration. My opponent makes a fair point about confidence, and I’m not sure how to argue that away, but I still feel winning gives all that effort a real target.

The real question is what we're actually rewarding when we play: effort with a goal, or just showing up. My opponent is fair that prizes aren't everything, and I'm honestly not sure how to answer that, but my gut still says winning is what gives participation a point.
