They were individuals who faced consequences from governments, not employers enforcing workplace rules.
The NFL, NBA, and MLB all have collective bargaining agreements. Players signed those contracts knowing the terms. When you're on the clock wearing a team uniform, you're representing an organization, not just yourself. A 2022 Harris Poll found 63% of fans said political demonstrations during games negatively impacted their viewing experience. That's a business problem.
I'm not saying athletes can't have opinions. Write op-eds. Do interviews on your own time. But during games, on the field, the focus should be on the sport. That's what people paid for.
