How can we claim to care about future generations while choking our oceans with something that'll outlast them?
A 2023 study in Science Advances found that 11 million metric tons of plastic hit the ocean each year—that's a garbage truck's worth every minute. By 2040, that number could triple. Single-use plastics make up about 40% of all plastic waste, and they're designed to be used for minutes but persist for centuries.
We already have alternatives. Look at Kenya—they banned plastic bags in 2017, and within two years, pollution dropped dramatically. The EU's single-use plastic directive cut certain items by 80% in some member states. This isn't radical. It's practical.
The plastics industry will tell you recycling is the answer, but only 9% of plastic ever gets recycled. The rest goes to landfills, incinerators, or the environment.
We don't need half-measures. A 2030 deadline gives industries a decade to adapt. Let's be honest: if we wait longer, we're just passing the problem to our kids.
