The portal kills loyalty because it turns commitment into a yearly option. Loyalty needs stability and reciprocal expectation: a player stays, a program develops him, fans invest in him. When every offseason invites exit and every roster spot invites replacement, both sides rationally plan for the next move. That doesn't mean loyalty was perfect before, but the portal makes it optional every year, and optional loyalty isn't loyalty. The other side can point to coaches leaving too, but that only shows the problem is structural, not that player movement is harmless.
