School uniforms should absolutely be optional. It’s been showing that they squash self expression. They can also make a lot of students feel like they don’t have a choice in the matter of what they’re wearing. Additionally, transgender students or gender nonconforming students will most likely not be able to get the uniform that they require, especially if their parent may disagree with them or not accept them. When they’re wearing their own clothing that they want to wear, this issue disappears. I can’t see any benefits that come with forcing students to wear uniforms that are often uncomfortable and unwanted. Instead, there are so many harms that affect students in day-to-day life
