Their ubiquity inflates their perceived greatness. If you strip away the historical context and just listen to the music objectively, it's solid pop, not the pinnacle of human achievement. Calling them the most overrated isn't a dismissal, it's a correction for decades of hype that outweighs the actual product.

Overrated implies a bubble, a hype that bursts under pressure. But The Beatles' influence isn't fragile — it's structural. Tens of thousands of bands, from punk to prog to pop, owe their entire sonic vocabulary to what Lennon and McCartney did in a few short years. That's not hype; that's a root system.
And here's the thing about skin in the game. These guys didn't play it safe. They released Revolver, then Sgt. Pepper, then the White Album, constantly risking their massive success to chase something weird and new. You can't call that overrated. You can call it overplayed, sure. But that's a different argument. The Beatles are the stress test every other band gets measured against. When your "peak" includes both Strawberry Fields and Helter Skelter, you're not overrated. You're the benchmark. Calling them overrated just means you're tired of hearing them, not that they aren't worthy.
