The question isn’t whether AI will do great science. It will. The question is whether the next Einstein, meaning the mind that reframes the problem everyone else got wrong, will be silicon. That framing favors my side. AlphaFold is a stunning tool, but it solved a well-posed prediction problem; Einstein’s 1905 work asked why the obvious assumptions conflicted at all. Current systems are brilliant interpolators with no sustained scientific agenda, no taste for which anomaly matters, and no ownership of a research program. Until AI can choose its own question and defend it for a decade, the paradigm shifter remains human.
