Landlords see the same check coming, and so do the grocery chains. Universal basic income doesn't fix the cost-of-living problem — it just feeds the inflation machine. I get the appeal, believe me. No strings attached, no means-testing hoops. But in a city like mine, where the gap between paychecks and prices is already brutal, throwing money at it without fixing housing supply or corporate pricing just jacks up everything. UBI sounds clean in theory, but on the ground it's a big bet that prices won't eat the whole check. And they always do. We need targeted solutions, not a universal blunt instrument.
