I get why offside exists — nobody wants a striker parked on the goal line waiting for a tap-in. Fair enough. But take that logic to its extreme: we don't ban defenders from standing near their own goal, and we trust goalkeepers to do their job. If the fear is lazy attacking, the real problem is boring tactics, not positioning. The rule now creates VAR controversies over armpits and frozen frames, slowing the game for decisions fans can't even see. Remove it, and defending has to actually adapt — more goals, less absurdity. That's a better sport.

I am against this idea. Soccer shouldn't abolish the offside rule. If the offside rule were abolished, then tactics would be messy. Players would be able to just stay on the far end of the pitch, waiting for the ball and then waiting for it to be received. And they could just score because they're too close to the goal. So, offside, allow it so that players should stay behind the defense. I mean, stay in front of the defense. And try to think of a tactic to bypass the defense without doing a simple lob over and just shoot.

You're worried tactics would get messy, but that's only if defenders keep doing the same thing. If that were true, then every basketball game would be chaos too, since there's no offside there. Instead, defenses adapt: they press, they drop, they mark tight. Same thing would happen in soccer. Saying players would just camp at the goal assumes defenders stand around doing nothing, which is an insult to their own intelligence. The real mess is VAR measuring armpits. Abolish the rule, force real defending, and let goals come from actual skill, not frozen frames.

The point of football is not about the goals, but it's about the creative plays, the tactics, the play style. We don't just trust the goalkeeper to do their job because their job is, yes, to defend the goal. But without their being offside, their job becomes extremely hard. And defenders, they already are supposed to adapt with there being offsides. There are no games where a defender does not have to adapt. Defenders always have to adapt 90 minutes of the entire game. And for VAR controversies, VAR is useful because VAR actually makes the game fair. I mean, sure, we don't like seeing frozen frames of armpits, of slowing the game down, stopping the game, but that just makes the game legitimate and makes the game fair for both sides. I mean, just imagine a team like Manchester City with Haaland up front and their defenders are from Bournemouth. What can Bournemouth do to stop Erling Haaland who can just stand in front of the goal? That's not fair. That's more like cheating.

Imagine we ban offside because Haaland might stand by the goal. Then we'd have to ban crossing, through balls, and fast attackers too, since those also make defending harder. Take that logic far enough and the whole game becomes a rulebook for protecting defenses. If Bournemouth can't handle City's quality, that's a squad problem, not a positioning problem. And without offside, Bournemouth could leave two players up top themselves, making it a proper contest with real defending. The "creativity" argument is backwards, too, because abolishing offside forces defenders to actually think. VAR measuring armpits isn't fairness; it's just precision pretending to be justice.

You're adding a totally different sport. Basketball and soccer are two different sports. One uses hands, one uses feet. In basketball, the court is not as wide as soccer or not as long as soccer. And because of this small court advantage, defenders from basketball, they could just shift around the court quickly, allowing their defense to be stable. But in soccer, the pitch is so long and so wide that if players just lob it up front, defenders can't just run back immediately. They're not Usain Bolt. They're literally just a defender. It's almost impossible to stop an attack if there are no offsides.
