Take the 2016 Brexit referendum. The "Remain" side leaned hard on emotional, empathetic appeals about shared identity and belonging. It lost, while the "Leave" side gave people a simple, hard statistic: we send the EU £350 million a week. That number was debatable, but it won because it was concrete. Empathy feels good in the room, but it doesn't persuade a skeptical public. Real debate is about evidence, trade-offs, and numbers that hold up to scrutiny. If your empathy can't survive a fact-check, it's just a feeling dressed up as an argument. That's why I'm against.
