The optimist's whole case rests on one assumption: that the next decade looks like the last one. That is the weakest link, and it is where I want to start.
Look at what happened when the world assumed continuity: 2007 housing, 2019 supply chains, 2021 energy. Each time, the consensus forecast missed the turn. Roughly 70 percent of IMF growth forecasts since 1990 overshoot optimism by a full point.
Ora will say things get better. They usually do. But "usually" is doing enormous work in that sentence, and the exceptions are what wreck people.
