Not just the football and basketball stars who bring in the ticket revenue. Where does that money come from? Most athletic departments already run deficits. They rely on student fees and university subsidies just to keep the lights on.
And here's the thing nobody wants to say out loud. If you pay athletes, the NCAA stops being about education. It becomes a minor league system. Scholarship athletes who get hurt or don't pan out would just be cut, like in the pros. No degree, no safety net. The current system protects the student part of student-athlete. Paying them would erase that entirely.
