A fetus is in a state a bodily dependency on the mother where the consent for being in the womb is absent therefore going against the mother’s right to bodily autonomy. A mother is not obligated to sustain for their baby in expense for their right bodily autonomy. A real world example in the U.S, a mother does not have the burden of personally breast feeding their child, rather they are needed to feed formulas to their child. For a quick analogy, if you caused someone to lose their kidney(s), are you morally obligated to donate your own kidney to compensate the loss of the patient? I’m sure most people believe that as unethical, because we cannot treat our rights as a mere property. Compensation in expense for bodily autonomy is something I can’t differentiate from slavery itself. A mother should not be required to pay the fetus her own inherent right for causing the fetus to be in the womb. Instead, the consequence of their action of getting pregnant should be other punishments like jail time. In simple terms, if women are to have an abortion, it is their right to do so. But for that the mother caused the fetus in the first place, the mother should face other punishments that do not involve the expense of their bodily autonomy.
