I disagree with the idea that abortion should be completely up to the individual because I don't think this is a decision that only affects one person. I understand why people argue that it should be a personal choice. Pregnancy can have a huge impact on someone’s body, health, education, relationships and future. And I’m not going to pretend that every pregnancy happens under perfect circumstances. Sometimes people are put into incredibly difficult situations. But the problem is that saying “it’s their choice” completely depends on what you believe a fetus is. If you believe that an unborn child is already a human life with moral value, then abortion isn’t simply a person making a decision about their own body. There are two lives involved, and the decision directly affects another developing human being. Think about it this way: we normally don’t say that having control over your own body gives you the right to do absolutely anything to another person. So if the fetus is considered a human life, then bodily autonomy alone doesn’t completely settle the argument. And I think that’s the biggest issue with the statement. It makes abortion sound much simpler than it actually is. Saying “everyone should have their own choice” basically assumes that the only relevant question is what the pregnant person wants. But there’s another question: what responsibility do we have towards the unborn child? I’m not saying the situation is black and white, or that every pregnancy has the same circumstances. I’m saying that because another potential human life is involved, abortion is something society has a legitimate reason to debate and regulate. It shouldn’t automatically be treated as nothing more than a personal choice.
