Both sides can agree telescopes produce extraordinary science per dollar. But the question is better investment, not cheaper science. Crewed spaceflight generates returns telescopes cannot: it develops launch, life support, robotics, materials, and medical technologies that spill into broader economies, and it sustains public engagement that funds the entire space enterprise. Telescopes benefit from that infrastructure. Apollo-era investment, for instance, seeded fields from integrated circuits to software. If we cut crewed flight for telescopes, we eventually lose the industrial base and public mandate that make those telescopes possible. So no, telescopes are not the better investment overall.
