Social media isn't a casino, and users aren't passive victims.
The “slot machine” analogy is exaggerated. Unlike gambling, social media doesn't have a single predetermined reward mechanism. People use it to communicate, learn, follow news, create content, and maintain relationships.
Attention engineering isn't unique to social media. TV, radio, newspapers, and even advertising have always used psychology, headlines, suspense, repetition, and personalization to retain audiences. Technology has made this more sophisticated, but sophistication doesn't automatically mean exploitation.
Users still have agency. Comparing a person scrolling Instagram to someone unable to leave a slot machine ignores an important difference: users can unfollow, mute, close the app, set limits, or simply choose different content.
