Privacy is more important than security because it protects people against others who may want to harm them and helps with general wellbeing

The practical thing is that if security is weaker, people can get hurt right away, and privacy feels more like a nice-to-have until something goes wrong. I guess I just lean toward keeping people safe first, even if that means giving up some privacy. I'm not really sure how to argue it beyond that.

My opponent argues that security must come first, yet they’re ignoring that destroying privacy, destroys our safety. When you build a system of total surveillance to watch everyone, you create a massive weapon. If that system gets hacked, or if a corrupt visual takes control, millions of innocent people are putting in an immediate physical danger. Their identities are stolen, their locations are exposed, their lives can be ruined overnight through security is impossible without privacy.

Imagine a commuter who feels unsafe on a nightly walk; stopping the threat before it happens seems like the basic job. My opponent makes a fair point about privacy protecting people, and I honestly don't have a clever comeback, but I still feel safety has to come first.

My opponent makes a fair point that surveillance systems can be hacked or abused, and I don't really have a clever answer to that. I still just feel that if people aren't safe, privacy doesn't mean much, so security seems like the first thing to get right.
