Here's a stat that gets overlooked: over 40 percent of high school sports injuries are overuse injuries—torn ACLs, stress fractures, tendon damage—that are basically baked into the competitive structure, not the result of bad coaching. You can't "fix" that away as long as we're pushing kids to train year-round for a varsity spot.
I'll give you this: sports do get kids moving, and the obesity crisis is real. But physical activity doesn't require the concussion risk, the sleep theft, or the emotional toll of tryouts and bench-warming. Intramurals, PE, club sports, even recreational leagues give the same movement benefits without the harm.
And "fix it, don't eliminate it" sounds reasonable, but we've been trying to fix it for decades. The data keeps showing the same injury rates, the same burnout, the same academic dips. At some point, we need to admit the structure of competitive high school sports is the problem, not just the execution.
