**Why We Need Voter ID**
Requiring voter ID helps protect the integrity of elections by verifying that each person casting a ballot is who they claim to be. Supporters believe it helps prevent voter impersonation, ensures that only eligible voters participate, and increases public confidence in election results.
Voter ID is also consistent with identification requirements that already exist for many everyday activities. Americans are commonly asked to show identification when boarding a commercial flight, opening a bank account, cashing certain checks, purchasing alcohol or tobacco, or applying for some government services. Supporters argue that voting—one of our most important civic responsibilities—should have a similar level of identity verification.
To ensure both election security and voter access, voter ID laws can be paired with policies that provide free, easily accessible identification for every eligible voter. This approach aims to protect the integrity of elections while ensuring that every qualified citizen has the opportunity to vote.
