Let's look at this from a structural standpoint. College sports exist within an educational framework, not a professional league. Paying athletes would turn universities into minor-league franchises, which is not their purpose. The athletic scholarship is already compensation—it covers tuition, room, board, and often includes academic support and medical care. That package is worth tens of thousands of dollars per year. Most players never go pro, but they leave with a degree and no student debt. That's a fair trade. Also, paying athletes would create massive inequities: star quarterbacks would earn huge sums while field hockey players get nothing. Title IX compliance would become a nightmare. The current system isn't perfect, but treating students as employees introduces more problems than it solves.
