Lawmakers should be banned from trading individual stocks to protect public trust, eliminate systemic conflicts of interest, and ensure that government officials prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal financial gain. As public servants, legislators have unique, early access to sensitive, non-public information through classified briefings, committee hearings, and pending regulatory decisions. Allowing individual stock trading creates an environment where politicians can—or appear to—use this insider knowledge to outperform the market, severely undermining the democratic principle of equal opportunity. Transitioning lawmakers to diversified mutual funds or blind trusts eliminates even the appearance of impropriety, reinstates transparency, and guarantees that legislative actions are guided solely by the public good rather than personal investment portfolios.
