Imagine a lawmaker hearing about a new defense contract in a closed briefing, then buying that contractor's stock before everyone else finds out. That just feels wrong to me, even if the other side says it's not technically illegal. So I lean toward banning it.
It is just a smart financial move on the lawmakers half. He saw a chance at investment and took it, it is the same as taking a 50/50 chance at buying the stock it is just a more informed decision.
Doesn't it just feel off when someone with inside access can trade like anyone else? My opponent says it's an open right, and fair enough, I can't really argue that. I still just think they shouldn't be allowed to.
Lawmakers get their information from serving the public, so they should not trade individual stocks. My opponent says it is just a smart choice, and fair enough, I am not sure how to argue that, but it still feels wrong.
