We can agree unbearable suffering is real and autonomy deserves respect. But legalizing euthanasia turns private mercy into public policy with irreversible mistakes. Data from the Dutch Regional Euthanasia Review Committees show scope creep: terminal cancer cases expanded to psychiatric suffering, dementia, even minors. Review is retrospective, so errors surface after death. Their 2022 report recorded 8,720 cases, a rising share non-terminal. Once the line moves, safeguards look like rubber stamps. That asymmetry, a dead patient cannot be corrected, justifies my opposition.
