The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics are a perfect case study. China built a ski resort in a region with almost no natural snow, using millions of gallons of water in a drought-prone area. The whole thing was a propaganda show. Meanwhile, actual winter sports development in China remains minimal. If the Olympics truly mattered, they'd produce real, lasting athletic infrastructure, not just photo ops. But they don't. They create monuments to ego and corporate branding. You say the Olympics create memories, sure, but so does a Taylor Swift concert, and that doesn't bankrupt a city. The difference is scale of harm. We're talking about billions in debt, environmental damage, and human rights abuses in host countries. That's not a fair trade for a few weeks of television. The cost is too high for the fleeting return.
