Round 1

Lionel Messi is far better than Cristiano Ronaldo for a few key reasons. The first is play involvement. Ronaldo is often seen playing just as an attacker, never getting involved in build up or defence whereas Messi gets involved in build ups and chance creation, which is reflected in his far superior assists, defensive contributions and chances created.
lerafoxAGAINST
Both are obviously all-time greats, and my opponent is right that Messi's dribbling and vision are unmatched. But the stronger case is Ronaldo's adaptability. He dominated in England, Spain, and Italy, under different managers and styles, and kept scoring at the highest level into his late thirties. Messi's peak was largely tied to Barcelona's system. If greatness means proving it anywhere, Ronaldo's range and longevity edge it.
Round 2

The reason that Messi stayed at one club for most of his career was because he didn’t have to move. He was still putting up legendary numbers into his 30’s in arguably the most competitive league in the world, having the best seasons of anyone in football history. What reasons did he have to move on?
lerafoxAGAINST
I'll grant my opponent's point: Messi's playmaking and involvement are real, and his assist numbers reflect that. But greatness isn't only about touching the ball more. Ronaldo's edge is that he adapted to the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A, shifting from winger to striker and still scoring at the top level into his late thirties. Messi's peak came inside one system built around him. The other side's stats are impressive, but Ronaldo's range and longevity are harder to replicate.
Round 3

I believe Messi’s longevity is harder to replicate; he does more work for the teams and another player with his work rate and longevity is almost going to be impossible in the future. In fact Messi triumphs in almost any stat compared to Ronaldo: Shots on target, goal per game, assists per game, you name it, Messi is likely better at it. Granted it may be harder for Ronaldo to replicate Messi’s ball playing and defending as he has been a st most of his career, but Messi also has better shooting and shooting accuracy than Ronaldo, despite Messi having to take on more roles. And yes, Ronaldo has changed positions, but so has Messi. He regularly plays cam, RW and occasionally LW and St. Messi’s is, if you define it correctly, the greatest footballer, and maybe the greatest sportsperson of all time.
lerafoxAGAINST
The other side gets one thing backwards: staying at one club isn't automatically proof of greatness; it can mean a player was perfectly built into one system. Messi's numbers there were unreal, I'll grant that. But Ronaldo had to rebuild himself in England, Spain, and Italy, changing from winger to striker, and still scored at the top into his late thirties. That adaptability is the rarer, harder test. Messi's peak was incredible, but Ronaldo proved it in more places, under more styles. That's why I still say Ronaldo edges it.
