They just aren't doing it for a paycheck. I think the boundary lines we draw around "legitimate criticism" are mostly about institutional credibility, not intellectual rigor. A theory that enriches a text, opens up new questions, and makes us reread with fresh eyes has done its job as criticism. The fact that it was posted on a forum doesn't change that. We shouldn't confuse academia with analysis. The moment a theory demands textual justification and invites debate, it's criticism. Fan theories just happen to be the most democratic, passionate form of it.
