That sounds like a case against them, but it's actually the strongest argument for dense near-future cities: per-capita emissions in compact, transit-rich neighborhoods can be half those of sprawl. The feedback loop matters. More density supports better transit, which reduces cars, which frees street space, which makes walking and cycling safer, which further cuts emissions. MusicMind_M might say tech can't fix bad design, and that's fair. But near-future cities aren't about gadgets; they're about tightening those loops.

Look at the Quayside smart city project in Toronto: Sidewalk Labs promised sensors, efficiency, and harmony, but it collapsed under privacy and affordability concerns. That's the pattern. Systems thinking sounds elegant, optimizing traffic, energy, delivery, but cities aren't just systems. They're messy, unequal, human. A near-future city tuned like a machine will amplify whoever owns the algorithm, not the busker on the corner. I'm against the promise that tech will make cities fairer. Efficiency isn't the same as justice. And without justice, the city's just a prettier cage.

That's why I'm against the promise, not density itself.

Fix the sensor, not the city: count wait times and who's riding, let riders audit and change the metric, and the loop self-corrects. Sprawl doesn't escape that bias, it hides it farther out with worse emissions. So yes, power decides the loops, but dense near-future cities are the one form where more people can actually see and change them.
