Here's a number worth sitting with. A 2017 Brennan Center analysis of 23.5 million votes in 2016 found about 30 suspected noncitizen ballots, roughly 0.0001 percent. My opponent will say we need checks to stop fraud, and in theory that sounds reasonable. But states already verify registration, and citizenship checks mostly catch eligible voters, naturalized citizens, people with common names, folks without a passport. The cost is real, millions spent, valid voters purged or forced to prove paperwork. If the problem is that tiny, the cure is worse.
