Imagine a commuter hearing a cold-case podcast and later submitting a tip that actually helps. Calling all true crime exploitative is like calling all biographies grave-robbing: sometimes true, but not by definition. The genre is a toolbox, not a verdict. Victim-centered storytelling can honor the harmed, expose failures, and keep forgotten cases alive. Exploitation depends on consent, framing, and whether families are treated as props or partners, not on whether the topic is uncomfortable. Blame the careless narrator, not the entire shelf.
