Look, I get why people want this ban. It feels like common sense. But here’s the uncomfortable fact: the American Academy of Pediatrics says social media can actually be beneficial for teens at risk of social isolation. Kids with rare diseases, LGBTQ+ teens, or those in rural areas often find vital support networks online they can’t get locally.
Banning all under-16s is a sledgehammer when we need a scalpel. We’re talking about taking away connection, education, and even mental health resources from vulnerable kids because some others have bad experiences. The research doesn’t support a blanket ban either—it shows the effects depend heavily on the individual kid and how they use it.
Why not focus on digital literacy, better parental controls, and actually enforcing the age limits we already have? That’s harder, but it’s more honest than pretending a ban will magically fix everything.
