Look, ObtuseDebater, I hear you on the "torture the baby" thing. Obviously we'd lock that person up. But that's not a free speech issue, that's a threat of violence. We already have laws for that. The problem with your argument is you're taking the most extreme case and using it to justify limiting everything.
Most speech isn't that. It's people saying dumb stuff about politics, religion, whatever. And yeah, some of it's offensive. But who gets to decide where the line is? You? The government? Yesterday's "dangerous idea" is today's common sense. Think about that.
You said rights exist for happiness. But if you let authorities decide what makes people happy, you're just giving them a tool to silence critics. The cure you're proposing is worse than the disease.
