I believe that when we are talking about utilities, we don't really mean in all cases monopolies because as we know, there are many brands of water, of electric power. And although they are more or less the same thing, people still choose what they like the most. And so this is exactly what happens to social media as well. All platforms are different, under the same package. TikTok, for example, is mainly focusing on short videos. YouTube is more on the long format. Twitter is for news or for writing Facebook as well Reddit is for opinion sharing and so on, so there are different needs for every social media platform, therefore we cannot not be stuck in the same place.
The second argument we want to bring to the table is the fact tha social media is the future. And if we treat social media like utility, then it is less likely for social media to shut down from any reason. Now, we cannot let social media shut down because, as I mentioned earlier, many people depend on it nowadays. And so by treating it as an utility, we add a layer of protection to it.
