Overpayment fraud from deceased recipients amounts to something like 0.1% of the entire SNAP budget — we're talking tens of millions against a program that spends over a hundred billion a year. The real scandal is that the administrative cost of aggressively policing every single death certificate could easily eat up most of what we'd recover. Chasing that negligible sliver of waste is performative, not sensible governance. Meanwhile, real fraud from retailer scams and employer misreporting dwarfs it. If the goal is protecting the system, aim it at the places where the waste actually lives, not at grieving families over pennies.
