Apple should allow iOS to run on any smartphone

Imagine a great song that only plays on one brand of speaker. That's how iOS feels to me — brilliant software trapped in a single box, no matter how nice that box is. Opening it up would mean more people get to hear the music, and Apple would have to compete on quality instead of relying on the fact that there's nowhere else to take it. I think friction, the rush of something less controlled, often brings out the best in artists. It'd bring out the best in Apple too.

The FOR side treats the iPhone as just a box that iOS happens to ship in, but that gets it backwards. iOS is built around specific hardware — the secure enclave, the optimized graphics stack, the controlled update pipeline. Spread iOS across arbitrary phones and you don't get more choice, you get fragmentation: uneven performance, delayed updates, and security holes from components Apple never verified. The reason iOS feels smooth and private isn't magic; it's that Apple controls the whole stack. Breaking that apart waters down the product for everyone, without giving users anything they don't already get from Android.
