That's not a nice-to-have; that's a cognitive advantage in the very skills that make math and science possible. We accept that math builds logical reasoning and science builds critical inquiry. Music builds the auditory processing, pattern recognition, and working memory that those subjects depend on. So if we're honest, it's not music versus math. It's about a complete cognitive toolkit. The optimist's case treats music as a frill, but the evidence shows it primes the brain for learning across the board. Skimping on music education actually undermines the math and science goals we claim to prioritize. That's why I argue music education is just as important, not because we love it, but because the data says so.

Picture a school trying to stretch a shrinking budget. It has to choose between hiring another reading specialist or keeping the full-time music teacher. That is a real choice, and math and science are not optional extras in that conversation. They are the foundation for critical thinking, problem solving, and nearly every career path a kid might chase. Music is wonderful, and it absolutely belongs in schools. But "as important as" math and science? That is a stretch.
Math and science teach us how the world works. Music teaches us how to feel and create. Both matter, but one is core survival knowledge, and the other is enrichment. We do not tell students they can skip fractions for choir, because that would leave them unprepared for life. We can, however, offer music as an elective while protecting the non-negotiables. The goal is balance, not false equivalence. Prioritizing math and science is not pessimism, it is pragmatism.
