The International Space Station has cost over $150 billion. For that money, we could have given every person on Earth clean drinking water for years. But fine, you say space is worth it. If that's true, then why stop at one station? Why not a moon base, a Mars colony, a telescope the size of a city? Each one costs billions more. Take that logic far enough, and we're spending trillions on rocks in the sky while people here can't afford insulin. At some point, you have to admit the trade-off is absurd.

You want to talk about understanding. The James Webb Telescope cost ten billion dollars. For that, we could have funded malaria research, vaccines, and still had change. If expanding understanding is the goal, then that logic means we should fund every possible science project—a bigger collider, a probe to every moon, a telescope for every frequency. But we don't, because we have to choose. Space isn't sacred just because it's far away. Understanding is worth something, sure, but not everything. At some point, the cost stops being about curiosity and starts being a way to avoid paying for things that actually matter.

Fair enough, the weather satellites and GPS are genuinely useful. I won't pretend otherwise. But if that's your argument, then you're admitting space is only worth it when it keeps us fed and oriented down here. So if the cost is justified by spin-off tech, then we should fund every crazy project on the hope it might help. A fusion reactor, a particle collider, a floating city—all for the spin-offs. If that logic holds, no research is ever wasteful. But it is. The difference is direct need versus distant possibility. That's the trade-off I'm talking about.
