Isn't it worth asking how many lives we're willing to sacrifice to keep a mosquito species around? I get the fear of messing with nature, and that's valid, but we already alter ecosystems constantly. The malaria and dengue these mosquitoes carry kill hundreds of thousands of people, mostly children, every year. That's not a hypothetical risk, that's a current, ongoing tragedy. We can be careful, study the impacts, and act responsibly, but waiting while people die isn't neutral. Eliminating the carriers saves real lives, and that has to count for something.
