Imagine a listener in 1999 hearing No Scrubs on the radio, then Unpretty a few months later. That range is why TLC's FanMail wins. Millennium is a flawless teen pop machine, and my opponent can rightly point to its sales. But FanMail is the more inventive album: futurist interludes, genre blurring production, and lyrics about independence, body image, and fame. It sounds like the Y2K internet age arriving, not just a boy band riding it. One album captured the moment's anxiety and its joy. That's superior.
