F6F Hellcat was a more crucial fighter because it was answer to Zero, the zero was ruling fighter of the skies in the Pacific until 1943. The Mustang went up against a tough adversary such as the Bf 109 but in my opinion the Zero was a much tougher adversary.

The Mustang was actually escorting bombers over Germany every day, which was the big job in Europe. The Hellcat was mostly fighting in the Pacific, so I have a hard time seeing how it was more crucial in the European theater. I could be wrong, but that is how it seems to me.

I see your point but the Hellcat provided support to dive bombers such as the hell divers and sbd, which is the main reason the us had dominated the Japanese from 43-45. The Mustang would occasionally see conflict with German bf 109s but if you look closely most fights were pretty close while on the other hand for the hellcat, the hellcat dominated the skies, as it was faster, it wasn't limited to airbases as it could be launched on an aircraft carrier. Also its 6 50 caliber machine guns would tear apart the zero within seconds.

That’s a fair point about the Zero being a tough opponent. But I still think the Mustang’s job protecting bombers over Germany mattered more for that theater. Without it, those raids would’ve been way more dangerous. I don’t know how to compare them, but that’s my gut feeling.
