Maybe the real question is whether a country can keep any shared moral story at all. Christian nationalism just says the Christian roots that shaped our laws and culture still matter, and that seems pretty reasonable to me. I don't really know how to defend it better than that.

A country still needs some shared moral story to hold together. That's a fair point about Jesus saying his kingdom isn't of this world, and honestly I don't know how to argue back. I just feel the Christian story is the one we already have.

It is and its good. But Jesus made a distinction between Church and State when he said give Ceaser what is Ceaser's.
It follows then that its not Ceasers right to interfere with the church. Vice versa.
